Algernon Cadwallader - Fun

"It began with a bird and eggs on a t-shirt."

Fun is an EP released by the Philly based emo-indie-punk-rock-nonsensical rhyme lords, Algernon Cadwallader. Perhaps better known for their equally colorful full length albums, the Fun EP is an often over looked release of theirs - highlighted by their use of shorter, almost surf rock inspired tunes. Alegernon Cadwallader are known for a few unique attributes as a group - sharp twinkly guitars with lots of Van Halen-esque tapping, absurdist lyrics that are more often screamed out than not, and colorful song titles and concepts (just look at their band name). Often hailed as one of the leading pioneers of the modern wave of emo and indie, Algernon knew how to write crowd pleasing songs complete with catchy harmonies. Fun is an intricate classic rock album at heart, with a notable flair for summertime tones and temperament - this is, as indicated by the title, a genuinely fun album with youthful vigor and childlike awe. The vinyl record is only the first three songs, while an additional CD adds three more songs. All tunes are about 2-3 minutes and carry unique energies that play in a comfortable fashion. An excellent one to add to the rotation, especially in the warmer months.
