Saint Vitus - Born Too Late

Saint Vitus never really fit in any categorization that grouped together the other bands of the 80's.  Putting them out through L.A. oddball label, SST, was really one of the smarter decisions Greg Ginn had. Unlike the other bands on SST, St.Vitus was slower and unbound; droning and heavier.  Very heavy.  St. Vitus is often pointed towards as being one the originators of doom metal - slower, Sabbath-like riffs featuring lots of fuzz. And by god they were one of the first to do that; much to the chagrin of the local L.A. punker than thous and dingus metalheads. So they never really fit one scene, but Born Too Late is generally considered the swan song if you will; a perfect balance between hardcore punk and 80's metal.  With their third album, the band decided to replace their former lead singer, with Baltimore's The Obsessed's singer, Scott Wino.  His vocals are less theatrical and more straight forward street punk - he sounds kinda like Lemmy. The music is awesome, including most of Vitus's well known songs. Dave Chandler's guitar tone is taut, like a hole is opened up in the sky from all the fuzz radiating off his amp. There's no bullshit and no beating around the bush. A very matter of a fact album with riffs for days.
