Boy's Life - Boy's Life

Another record I recently picked up. Boy's Life formed in the early 90's in Kansas City and lasted until about 1996. They were prolific in the early emo/alternative/indie rock scene for their steady use of quiet-loud landscapes, unique dual guitar tone, imaginative sound spaces, and reserved vocals. All these things would be propagated by hundreds of following bands in the years to come, but Boy's Life was one of the pioneers of this genre, bridging a gap between bands like Dinosaur Jr and Jimmy Eat World. This is their first album, dutifully self-titled and released on the indie label Crank!. It's a mix of songs that appeared on a few 7"s they had already put out, as well as some brilliant original tracks. The introduction songs are belligerent in terms of vitality. These tunes vibe out with a breakneck catchy speed and mass of unusual time signatures. Think of Slint and Nirvana tossed into a blender. Although the most accurate comparison would probably be fellow label mates, Christie Front Drive, with whom they shared a split 10". That being said, the music of Boy's Life stands alone as a document to mid 90's cathartic rock music trying to find a voice in post-grunge and pre-indie America.
