Oh shit, it’s Main Source.
Toronto pro’s Sir Scratch and K-Cut joined up with Queen’s Large
Professor to put together one of the most recognizable albums from Hip Hop’s
Golden Age. Plus it has the first
appearance of Nas, so historically this album is considered a legend. Overall, it’s some pretty funky shit. The production is old school, so don’t be
looking for something that wasn’t invented yet.
The songs have plenty of flowing movements that define the early New
York sound. It is always somewhat surprising,
Main Source isn’t in the same boat as De La Soul or Tribe, but they really only
released two albums. Breaking Atoms is
colorful, vibrant, and informed. The
raps are tight, smartly written perspectives on the early 90’s. The quality may seem rudimentary by today’s
production standards, but that doesn’t disqualify Breaking Atoms from being
dope.
