Screamo, or scramz if you are into making words more fun (aka funner), is a genre defined by the aggressive yelling of lyrics. Songs can be four seconds long or nine minutes, they can be really pretty or super aggressive, and they may include samples from films or TV like hip hop does. It is a polarizing genre of punk/emo crossbreeding that many love and live by while many despise it for being too violent sounding. Orchid is one of the first bands that comes to mind when someone mentions scramz. These then kids hailed from Massachusetts and brought forth all of the pure anger and emotion they could muster. While at first listen they appear overly upset, they mastered the art of sounding emotional while not taking themselves too serious. They didn't last long either, just from 1997-2002. Still, they have ingrained themselves into this weird genre and their iconography can still be seen on t-shirts at many hardcore shows. Perhaps due to their extensive touring across the country or their tendency to release multiple colored vinyls of their records (scramz fans love their rare blue marbled vinyl). Dance Tonight! Revolution Tomorrow! is their second full length album, released on infamous punk label Ebullition; the album clocks in at only 16 minutes. Vocals are of course screamed, politics and philosophy are yelled out, and the instruments might have been set on fire at some point because the band plays like they need to get out of the studio in a matter of seconds or they will be burned alive.
this is our party-
we pick the records-
we set the dress-code.
and make love on the dance floor.
like it or not we're the
only game in town!
Orchid is many things, most of which occur viciously at the same time in record speeds, but they are not a band that fucked around.
