i hate myself - 10 Songs

RETREAT! AND COME BACK HOME! Ok so that song (To A Husband At War) isn't technically on the original album, however it has been added to my copy of 10 Songs, aptly named 11 Songs. i hate myself never named any of their releases say for "i hate myself." The fans or maybe the label gave them the monikers of 10 songs, 2 songs, 4 songs, etc. I don;t think they were the first to do this, Evergreen and Indian Summer did similar things. Enough hoo-hah, I haven't posted in a good while, the world has been in shambles and I have been preoccupied with getting my life straightened out. But today I put this album on and decided to do a little post about about for the sake of "why not." i hate myself was a trio, two brothers and their friend, down in Gainesville, FL. They only existed for about a year or so, with a few reunions here and there. They have remained huge fan favorites from the emo and screamo genres to this day. Pioneers in fact. Their use of pop culture references, pure unfiltered lyrical rage, and stellar quiet - loud dichotomy has been copied by bands from all over the world. 10 Songs is their victory lap, their only full-length LP with both sides belonging to them. Timeless riff-based punk is the best way to describe this album, no duds on this bad boy. Absolute powerhouse of an album from start to finish, and such an excellent variety of ideas too. They have poppy romantic songs about love interests acting "street" in a vain attempt to be cool, a more traditional punk song comparing depression to a Godzilla film, a tragic two minute tale of forbidden Shakespearean love in the Heaven's Gate cult, and a brutally honest discussion with an imaginary therapist named Dr. Seussicide. Every song has a unique vibe and theme. I read that the band was being ironic most of the time with their songwriting, but even in irony there are kernels of truth. Perhaps there in lies the beauty of little trio named i hate myself.
