An extraordinarily fun double 7" punk compilation put out by Further Beyond Records, a Chicago suburb record label in the early 90's that released music by Cap'N Jazz, Heel, and Trigwater. Further Beyond doesn't have a huge roster of albums out, as was the case with many independent labels during the time. They mostly operated as a means to put out a cheap, self-designed record by a high school age bands while maintaining artistic control and vision. Basil Shadid was the label runner and as far as I can tell, the goal was simply to release his friend's songs on a physical medium. There is something remarkably innocent and yet innovative when it comes to these releases. With humbleness and boldness, these bands played their fast little songs with vigor and a intrinsic sense of youthful maturity. The first disc is amazing, side one has The Bollweevils and Lynard's Innards, two similar punk bands from Chicago that sing songs about relationships gone awry. Side two is Friction and Sunstroke, Friction is an infamous band, known for their high-octane passion and Sunstroke has a pop-punk grunge sound that grew on me more than I expected. The second disc is I dare say even better than the first one. Cap'N Jazz kicks it off with Soria and boy, if you were making a list of underrated Cap'N Jazz songs, this one would be on it. It's a great bop with amazing screaming and one helluva guitar lick, no clue what the name means, it could be a city in Spain, a Norwegian fairy tale castle, the Italian wine grape, or shit, even just someone's name. 8-Bark takes the song after them with a fun Meat Puppets-esque bop with a hilarious guitar solo. The last side includes Heel, a tucked away band that put out some really rocking tunes in 1993 - I think the song off of Picking More Daises is their best. Dipole Moment finishes the album off with some crazy riffing jams - I love their band name too. All in all, this is a wonderful lo-fi punk compilation with 8 songs of joyous celebration in the name of rock by and for the kids. I found this baby at Reckless Records in Chicago, who knows who owned it before. It's one I will hold close to my heart and play time and time again.
