Gauge - Soothe

I've been reading up on the Chicago punk scene lately; more specifically, the cultural spread from the city into the north and west suburbs in the late 80's and early 90's. Such a cool music scene. Plenty of experimentation, original ideas, and positive attitudes. Most importantly the emphasis was on the kids and the music - I was too young to be around for this, but I grew up not far from the scene and have always respected it for giving my community something of a voice in the world of indie rock.  Gauge was one of the front-runners of the movement, comprised of members of other area bands like, Target and Ivy League. Gauge was a powerhouse of a rock band with two guitars, like three vocalists, and more energy than you could shake a leg at. They seemed to fully embrace the DIY spirit, despite only existing from 91 to 94. They made their own records, played 150 some shows, and engaged (haha) audiences with buzz and emotion. Soothe was their first full length album, collecting 11 songs together of face-pounding power chords and fancy fret noodles. Gauge was quite good, very skilled and dedicated to their music. These are quick (but not too quick) action-oriented (but not violent) rock songs with edge and quality worked into every soundbite.
