The Melvins want you to know that Pacific Northwest grime rock is the only rock that matters. That and Kurt Cobain kinda sucked and grunge was a marketing term used to sell more 90's kids flannel in their Happy Meals. Haha. The Melvins hail from rainy Washington where everyone seemingly wants to go move out to and have no fun together. They are one of the few early indie rock lords to still be touring and releasing new material; quite consistently actually - no drug binges or goofy solo projects (okay they did the Kiss thing where they released an album with each of their faces on it). Their style is probably where the golden baby of grunge comes from - in its purest form - loud, slow, heavy, droning, cold, either crazy long or short song times, just the essence of mud in general. Buzz and Dale are two of the scariest dudes to come out of those Washington forests in the mid 80's. And Shirley Temple'd daughter, Lori is so flipping cool. She could play a mean bass. Bullhead is the third full length album from the Melvins, after a few compilations and demos. As opposed to their earlier stuff, this album marks the change from the Melvins as a fore father of Seattle rock to a staple. The songs were longer, more planned out, refined, and "conservative." It kind of reminds me of an Ozzy Black Sabbath album, about 8 songs of heavy, un-adulterated riffs and rhythmic pounding. Some might call it stoner, sludge, or whatever - but words are meaningless. The Melvins just want to violate your ears for 40 minutes.
